The worst thing about working with my twin is he's so demanding. He makes us do the extra things that keep us sharp.
For breakfast this morning, I had Smart Start cereal.
The first thing I do when I get in in the morning is get a cup of coffee and say hello to everybody.
My colleagues would be surprised to know that I love to cook. I veer toward French and Italian [cuisine]. My wife is a vegetarian, so I like to cook fish. She's a fish-etarian.
My favorite guilty pleasure is honey-roasted cashews.
When I retire, I'll teach. Or consult. Or cook.
People tell me I look like the celebrity James Caan. That's what they used to tell me anyway. Now I'm looking more like Jack Nicholson. I turned gray a couple of years ago. Women worry about it, but it's just as bad for a man.
The most famous person I've ever met is Princess Diana. At least, she's the one I had the most affinity for. She's such a tragic figure. She had so much charisma. [He pulls out a picture of Princess Di sitting in a red dress at a round table next to Bob Dole, looking directly at the camera.] This was two months before she died at an event we catered at the National Women's Museum. She came to promote an International Red Cross mission.
My favorite exercise is swim masters' competitions to stay fit. It's for the old people. I swam all through college [at Stanford University where he was an All-American in the 1980s]. |

I swam the 100-meter butterfly. I was on the same team as world-record holder Pablo Morales. When it came time for Olympic trials, I was always top 10, but never top three.
My other hobbies are ... I bike a lot. I would consider that one of my passions. I'm going to Europe for five days in July with a small group to ride in the [French] Alps. It rides concurrent with the Tour de France. I'm considering taking performance-enhancing drugs.
You would never guess I listen to kids' tapes. I listen to Bill Harley -- he's a kid's comedian.
I'm addicted to ... from a business standpoint, having a full plate. I like to be busy. When it's slow I need to be manufacturing all kinds of projects. I like it when we're cranking. I like to test the limits of the company.
My pet peeve is ... like a lot of other business owners, I have a real problem with people who say they're going to do something and don't do it. It breaks down trust. That trickles to my wife and daughters. I say, "If you say you're going to do something, do it."
The trend in catering today is ... Right now there are a lot of microtrends -- fancy, boutique beef from Japan, specialty cocktails that help define the event. Right now we're in a transition period. There's not a lot of trends out there that are noteworthy like the Atkins diet. |
